Why the Super Bowl is So Super

Why the Super Bowl is So Super

Tucked after the festive holidays… resting in the long days of winter… nestled in the winter mundane of February (and conveniently located after many New Year’s diet resolutions have loosened up) is this rowdy, unifying, bizarre and fun representation of modern Americana at its most authentic and free. Whether or not you care about football itself or the teams playing, the Super Bowl brings people together, emboldens us to eat the most ridiculously indulgent of party food, and invites us to relish the refreshing camaraderie that comes from hilarious commercials and wild halftime shows like few other events can.

How to Super Bowl like a Champ

There’s no right way to Super Bowl, but there are some fun ways to make gathering memorable, easy, and enjoyable for everyone. From our family kitchen to yours, here are our best Super Bowl party tips and ideas (in no particular order).

  • Two locations streaming the game (if ya can swing it). There are usually a couple types of guests… those that are really into the game (don’t like distractions), and those that are more into the commercials and camaraderie (mostly into friends and food). A separate place for each group to gather and enjoy the festivities can be helpful.

  • Kids’ Corner:  If there will be kids at your party, giving them a designated area for activities and amusement can help them and their adults have more fun. Toys, dress-up clothes, simple kid food as well as clear-colored drinks (maybe even spill-proof ones-- we like boxed apple juice), and movies on an iPad make for a solid start. Planning ahead for children is a win for everyone-- adults get some uninterrupted time and kids know where to have their kind of fun.

  • Put your focus on how YOU love to host:  One of the best things about hosting is making your guests feel special in ways that also bring you joy. So if decorations make you smile, decorate away.  If fun crafted beverages are your passion, knock people’s socks off with those. Spend your time sharing the elements of hospitality that you love and outsource or take volunteers to help with the rest.

  • Super Bowl Food!  [We are not ashamed to say that we think this is of utmost importance] Embrace the fact that there are no rules for Super Bowl food. The more eclectic and varied, the better. Don’t stress on making it all yourself-- have fun and whip up your signature dish or something you’ve been itching to try. Found a queso recipe on Pinterest that puts a pep in your step? Bust that out. Got a brownie recipe that makes people swoon? That’s your scratch-made contribution. From there, we suggest that you gather up the tastiest collection of delicious prepared party food from places you know and love so you can put together an effortless and simple feast. Have fun, friends!
