"GOURMANDISE" ORIGIN & MEANING
What Is a “Gourmandise,” Anyway?
The name might sound a little bit whimsically fancy—and we kind of love that. It’s fun to realize how beautifully the name we inherited now fits who we’ve become. Gourmandise is a French word whose translation means quite a few things like:
A love of good food
The joy of indulgence
The pleasure of eating—especially something sweet, buttery, or beautifully made
It’s a kind of magical word that celebrates the art of savoring—without guilt, without rush, and ideally, with a flaky croissant in hand.
Why the Name Stuck
We didn’t invent the name Gourmandise—but we fell in love with it, just like so many have over the 30-plus years we’ve loved hosting and nourishing and serving people in Utah. When we took the reins of this beautiful bakery, the name felt like a promise: to carry on a tradition of thoughtful, joyful food. It’s elegant. It’s a little indulgent. And it perfectly captures what we strive to serve—every croissant, every espresso, every bite.
A Little History
The word has roots in the Latin gula, meaning “throat” or “appetite” (hello, gluttony). But in modern French, it’s softened—more about joy than excess. In fact, “une gourmandise” can also mean a little treat—something special, savored, and just for you.
At Our Core
Gourmandise is more than our name. It’s the lens we look through to:
Make food with care
Serve it beautifully
Welcome people into our store to slow down, sit down, & truly enjoy
That’s the kind of indulgence we believe in.
Your Invitation
You don’t have to be fluent in French to understand Gourmandise. It’s the quiet joy of a warm pastry, the beauty in slowing down, & the treat you didn’t plan for—but absolutely deserved.
Bring a friend. Bring your appetite. We’ll take it from there.
